SUMMIT, An Earth Services Company is seeking individuals to join the Reclamation, Remediation and Risk Management (RRRM) Division as an Environmental Specialist (Competition: #25-02-0695) based out of Medicine Hat, Alberta. This is a full-time temporary position (May 5, 2025- September 5, 2025) and will require both field and office work.
What to Expect:
As an Environmental Specialist you will be provided with an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and gain practical experience in the field.
Skills you will learn:
Fundamental methodology, applicability, and importance of various Environmental Assessments including but not limited to: groundwater and surface water sampling, vegetation assessments, and soil assessments and sampling.
Principles of vegetation management.
Proper field data collection methodology and the importance of proper field data collection in its application to various Environmental Assessments.
Introduction to the application of the various environmental regulations and guidelines for environmental work, in the oil and gas industry, in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan.
Methodology and process of Phase II drilling and sampling.
Importance of Field Safety and safety requirements of the oil and gas industry.
You will be supported by the entire Summit organization which consists of a dynamic team of Professional Engineers, Biologists, Chemists and Agrologists, technical administrators, business development professionals, and an in-house IT department.
Job Duties:
You will carry out your duties in consultation with RRRM Project Managers on all matters. The primary duties include but are not limited to:
Assist with Vegetation management programs throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Assist with various environmental site assessments including Phase I field assessments, Phase II field assessments (soil and water), soil and vegetation assessments, detailed site assessments, and post reclamation assessments.
Supervision of minor field activities related to the reclamation or restoration of oil and gas facilities.
Completed field notes and digital data uploads which will be reported to your Project Manager and/or project supervisor/mentor.
Complete daily safety assessments on work locations and ensure compliance with all applicable safety requirements i.e. Summit, various oil and gas producers and OH&S.
Work in remote locations in northern and/or southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. There will be significant travel associated with this work.
Candidates must be prepared to work in a multidisciplinary, fast paced project team environment and be able to undertake a variety of project tasks related to RRRM.
The ability and willingness to facilitate and participate in efficient and regular communications with remote Project Managers and team leads is required.
Qualifications:
Current enrollment in an environmental program at a university or college in Alberta or Saskatchewan.
Experience or core knowledge in environmental studies, wetland identification, soils identification and classification, vegetation identification and classification, and reclamation.
Pesticide applicator certification is an asset.
Ability to take initiative and ownership and work independently.
Excellent multitasking and problem-solving skills.
Ability and willingness to travel to remote work locations.
Ability to work with minimal supervision when required.
Experience with office software including MS-Outlook, MS-Excel, and MS-Word
